How candle warmer lamps work (and why the wax lasts so much longer)

A bulb melts the wax from above instead of a wick burning it from within. Nothing is consumed, so the candle outlasts a burned one by a long way — until the fragrance gives out rather than the wax.

A candle warmer lamp melts the surface of a candle using the heat of a bulb suspended above it, instead of a flame burning down through it. The melted pool releases scent exactly the way it does when a candle is lit — scent comes off the warm wax, not the flame — but nothing combusts. No soot, no smoke, no wick to trim, and no open fire to remember to put out.

What a candle warmer lamp actually is

Physically it is a small lamp on an arm, with the bulb pointing straight down at a plate where the candle sits. Switch it on and the bulb warms the top layer of wax over ten to twenty minutes until a shallow pool forms. That pool is where the fragrance oil evaporates from, which is the same mechanism as a lit candle — people are often surprised by that, but the flame on a normal candle is not what you are smelling. It is just what melts the wax.

Because the heat comes from above rather than from a wick inside, the melt is even across the whole surface. This quietly solves the most annoying failure of jar candles: tunneling, where a wick burns a narrow shaft down the middle and leaves a thick ring of wax stuck to the glass forever.

Why the wax lasts so much longer

This is the part worth understanding, because it is the real economic argument for one.

When a candle burns, the wax is fuel. It is drawn up the wick, combusted, and converted into carbon dioxide and water vapor that leave the room. The wax is genuinely gone — that is why the jar empties.

A warmer never burns anything. It only melts. When it cools, the wax solidifies again, essentially unchanged. Nothing leaves the jar except the fragrance oil evaporating off the surface. So a candle in a warmer is not consumed; it is gradually de-scented.

The practical consequence catches people out: your candle will stop smelling of anything long before it looks used up. When the scent fades and the wax still looks nearly full, the fragrance load is exhausted and it is time to replace it. That is normal, not a fault.

Which bulb do candle warmer lamps use?

Almost always a small halogen bulb, and the reason matters: you are using the bulb for its heat, not its light. Halogen bulbs run hot, which is a drawback in most lamps and precisely the point in this one.

This is why the most common mistake is swapping in an LED when the bulb goes. An LED of the same brightness produces a small fraction of the heat, and the lamp will simply stop melting wax while looking like it is working perfectly. If yours has stopped melting after a bulb change, that is almost certainly the cause. Replace like for like with the bulb type printed on the fitting or in the manual.

How long does wax last in a warmer?

Far longer than burning the same candle, though nobody can give you a number in hours because it depends entirely on the fragrance load of the candle rather than the warmer. A useful way to think about it: burning gives you a fixed number of hours because you are consuming fuel; warming gives you scent until the oil runs out, and the wax is just the carrier it lives in.

When the throw fades, scoop the old wax out while it is soft — a warm pool lifts out with a spoon far more easily than a cold block — and start a new candle or a wax melt on the plate.

Are they safe to leave on?

Safer than an open flame, which is most of the appeal, but not a device to forget entirely. There is no fire to catch a curtain and no wick to flare, so the two classic candle hazards are gone. What remains is a hot bulb and hot wax — keep it away from the edge of a table where a pet or a sleeve can catch it, and let it cool before moving the jar.

The sensible answer to "can I leave it on?" is to not have to decide. A timer settles it, which is why both of the warmers we stock have one. Jar candles or wax melts?

Both work. A jar candle is the tidier option because the glass contains everything and you can lift the whole thing away. Wax melts are cheaper per use and let you change scent more often, but you will want a small dish on the plate to catch them. If you already own candles that tunneled and were abandoned half-used, a warmer is the thing that rescues them — the wax is still perfectly good.
