Living Room

The Living Room edit

Living room shelves, lighting & decor

The room people actually see. Lit floating shelves, warm lamps, wood vases and flameless candles — pieces that add character to a living room without crowding it.

Are floating shelves a good idea?

They work well where you want storage that does not visually fill a room — the bracket is hidden, so the shelf reads as a line rather than a piece of furniture. That makes them particularly good in small rooms and above furniture where a standing unit would crowd the space.

The catch is load. A floating shelf carries less than a bracketed one because everything goes through the fixing, and how much less depends entirely on what is behind the plaster. Into a stud or with proper cavity fixings, they are solid. Into plasterboard with the screws supplied, they are not.

Hanging them at the right height

Above a sofa, leave roughly 10 to 12 inches of clear space above the back cushions — closer looks cramped and further reads as unrelated to the furniture. In an alcove, work to eye level for the shelf you actually look at, then space the others evenly from there. Measure from the ceiling rather than the floor if the floor is not level, because the eye reads the ceiling line.

Layering light

A single ceiling fixture flattens a living room. Three low, warm sources at different heights will do more than any amount of decorating — a lamp on a side table, something warm on a shelf, and a soft light near the door for the evening. Lit shelving does two of those jobs at once.

Styling a shelf without it looking staged

Odd numbers, varied heights, and leave a third of the shelf empty. The most common mistake is filling it evenly end to end, which reads as a display rather than a room. One tall object, one low, and space between them.

Common questions about Living Room

Are floating shelves any good?
Yes, where you want storage that does not visually crowd a room — the hidden bracket makes the shelf read as a line rather than furniture. They carry less weight than a bracketed shelf, because all the load goes through the fixing, so what is behind the wall matters.
How much weight can a floating shelf hold?
It depends almost entirely on the fixing, not the shelf. Into a stud or with proper cavity anchors, they are strong. Into plasterboard with whatever screws came in the box, expect very little. Check the product page for the rating and buy fixings suited to your wall if you are unsure.
How high should shelves go above a sofa?
Leave about 10 to 12 inches above the back cushions. Any closer looks cramped, any further and the shelf stops reading as related to the sofa. In an alcove, set the shelf you look at most to eye level and space the rest evenly from there.
How do I style a shelf so it does not look staged?
Odd numbers, different heights, and leave roughly a third of the shelf empty. Filling it evenly end to end is what makes shelving read as a display. One tall object, one low, and breathing room between.
What is the easiest way to make a living room feel warmer?
Replace one bright overhead light with two or three low, warm sources at different heights. Light does more for how a room feels than furniture or paint, and it is the cheapest thing to change.
