Are sensor bins worth it?

In a kitchen, genuinely yes — it is the one place you regularly have full or dirty hands and need the lid open. Not touching a bin lid while handling raw chicken is a real hygiene difference, not a marketing one. In a bathroom or office the case is weaker, and a good step bin does the same job for less.

The two complaints people have are batteries and false triggers. Rechargeable models remove the first. The second is placement: a bin that opens every time someone walks past is a bin standing in a walkway, not a faulty sensor.

How touchless soap dispensers work

An infrared sensor detects a hand an inch or two below the nozzle and runs a small pump for a fixed dose. Because the dose is measured, you use noticeably less soap than a pump you press — and there is no crust on the nozzle, because nothing is being squeezed through by hand.

Motion lighting

Motion lights make sense where you would otherwise fumble for a switch with your hands full or your eyes adjusted to the dark — hallways, under cabinets, the route to the bathroom at night. Because they are only on when someone is there, they use less energy than a light left on, though the saving is small compared with the convenience.
